    Course Description

If a picture is worth a thousand words, consider for a moment the worth of a compassionate caress, a pat on the back, a warm embrace, or a firm handshake. Often overlooked, these everyday touches are fundamental to effective communication, the development of loving relationships, and our overall health and wellbeing. The sense of touch develops in the womb and is believed to be the last sense to leave us.

While numerous studies confirm many therapeutic benefits associated with touch including, reduced stress, improved sleep, improved memory, and improved pain management, Western medicine has been slow to harness its healing powers. Indeed, we live in a touch-deprived culture and unsurprisingly place more faith in medical machines to heal than hands, especially as we live in fear of spreading superbugs.

Join Rosalyn Cama as she explores this amazing sense organ and reminds us not to forget the human dimension of healing when designing medical spaces.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. To gain a greater appreciation for the amazing sense of touch with a basic overview of how our skin receives and interprets messages about the world around us.
    2. To understand the link between physical touch and wellbeing. A review of baseline research will reveal a host of health outcomes impacted by touch.
    3. To explore how the built environment, specifically in healthcare, both deters and encourages physical touch and how this may impact health and wellbeing.
    4. To review a prototype chair designed to encourage patient and family interactions at the bedside to foster wellbeing and speed recovery from illness. Audience members will have an opportunity to test the chair and provide feedback.
